Volusia County Sex Offender Takes Own Life

7-26-2010 Florida:

A convicted sex offender is no longer among us.

Volusia County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Gary Davidson said the unidentified man took his own life on Monday as deputies arrived at his house near DeLand to investigate a rape complaint.

The dead man’s name (Gerry Orr) is being withheld until family members are notified.

The incident occurred shortly after noon on Monday, while deputies were following up on a complaint from a 23-year-old woman who claimed to have been sexually assaulted by the 40-year-old suspect.

As deputies armed with a search warrant responded to the man’s home, took their position and prepared to go to the door, they heard a bang from inside the house.

When no one answered the door, deputies forced their way into the house and found the man dead in a bedroom from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The case remains under investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available. ..Source.. by Halifax Area News Watch

Deceased sex offender's girlfriend sought

7-28-2010 Florida:

A sex offender who fatally shot himself when deputies showed up at his house had held a woman hostage and sexually battered her, using guns to scare her, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies also are looking for Gerry Orr's live-in girlfriend, Jacqueline Delrey, 42, who has not been seen in more than a week, said sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson. "Investigators haven't found any signs of foul play, but they want to talk to her to make sure she's OK," Davidson said.

Orr, 40, who lived near DeLand and had a conviction for alewd and lascivious act on a child, shot himself Monday after deputies obtained a warrant to search his home, which arose from a weeklong investigation by deputies after the allegations were made to Sanford police by a 23-year-old woman, Davidson said.

The woman reported to Sanford police that Orr held her captive for at least three days and repeatedly raped her in his Old New York Avenue home. The woman said she voluntarily went to Orr's home where they took drugs, but after a couple days she tried to leave and Orr would not let her. He threatened her with guns, Davidson said.

The woman finally got the opportunity to escape when their car broke down on their way to Sanford for more crack cocaine.

Neighbors of Delrey said they haven't seen her in about a week, and family members have gone even longer without seeing her. Anyone with information about Delrey's whereabouts is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 386-736-5999. ..Source.. by PATRICIO G. BALONA, Staff writer

Police Seek Girlfriend of Sex Offender Who Committed Suicide Near DeLand

7-29-2010 Florida:

Authorities are seeking the public's help in locating the live-in girlfriend of a convicted sex offender who committed suicide this past Monday when deputies attempted to gain access to his house near DeLand.

Jacqueline Delrey hasn't been seen by friends and neighbors in over a week and Volusia County deputies are concerned for her well-being after the death of Gerry Orr. Deputies are saying at this point they don't suspect foul play in her disappearance, but would like to make sure she is ok.

Gerry Orr put a gun to his head and killed himself after deputies arrived at his house to serve a search warrant in a sexual battery case. As deputies approached the house they heard a bang, and after forcing their way into the home found Orr dead.

That case involved a 23-year-old victim who told deputies Orr held her against her will at his house in DeLand for three days after she asked to leave the house following a day of doing drugs with Orr. The victim said Orr forced himself on her five times over the three day period and went with him to Sanford in the hopes she could jump out of his car while they were there.

During the trip Orr's car broke down and the woman was able to make it away from him and call police.

On Monday, deputies went to Orr's house to look for evidence linking him to the sexual battery when he killed himself.

Deputies searched the home after Orr's death and found two additional guns, but no sign of Delrey. Family members of Delrey's said they haven't seen her in some time.

According to court records Orr was convicted in 1989 of lewd and lascivious behavior with a child under 16. ..Source.. by Lisa Stephenson

Remains ID'd as offender's girlfriend

9-1-2010 Florida:

Authorities late Tuesday confirmed a body found in the woods at Lake Beresford Park near DeLand is the same woman who has been missing since July, when Volusia County sheriff's deputies began investigating her boyfriend.

The medical examiner identified Jacqueline Delrey through dental records, according to Volusia County Sheriff's Office spokesman Gary Davidson.

"We were kind of staying optimistic and hoping that this wasn't her," Delrey's sister Eva Colina said Tuesday night while crying. "But we kind of suspected that it was, and it's a gruesome, gruesome discovery, and it's not the way that anyone wants to remember their loved one passing away.

"We're trying to keep it together," she said. "We're just trying to do what we have to do. I don't know what the next step is, but we're just trying to deal with this."

Delrey, a 42-year-old mother of two daughters, has been considered missing since July 26, when Volusia County sheriff's deputies came to her home on New York Avenue near DeLand to question her live-in boyfriend, Gerry Orr, a convicted sex offender who was under investigation again in a rape case.

Orr, 40, shot himself in the head as deputies with a search warrant waited for him to come to the door, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Soon after Orr's death, the Sheriff's Office announced Delrey was missing -- and her insulin medicine and beloved pet Shih Tzu were left behind in the house.

The first sign of her surfaced Aug. 22, when people walking in Lake Beresford Park found a partly decomposed leg with bite marks. Two days later, authorities trapped an 8-foot alligator in the lake -- near the spot where the leg was found -- but officers found no human remains in its stomach.

On Friday, search-and-rescue volunteers with cadaver dogs found "most of the entire bodily remains," Davidson said, and brought them to the Medical Examiner's Office.

Davidson said Tuesday the body was too decomposed to determine a cause of death, but an investigation by the agency's Major Case Unit is continuing.

The case against Orr began when a 23-year-old woman told police he held her hostage for at least three days and raped her in the home he shared with Delrey.

Delrey, divorced eight years ago, moved from South Florida to DeLand in 2009 to live with her boyfriend Orr. She learned his sex offender status in June and, according to family members, wanted to end the relationship. ..Source.. by ANDREW GANT, Staff writer

Police Say Molester Committed Suicide

7-16-2010 Michigan:

New information on a car fire that killed a Blackman Township man earlier this week. It happened Wednesday afternoon near US 127 and Reed Road in Liberty Township. Just hours before the fire, 58-year-old Thomas Holdridge was in court. The Jackson County prosecutor says, on Tuesday, he had issued a warrant charging Holdridge with second degree criminal sexual conduct.

On Wednesday morning Holdridge was in court where he lost his parental rights. Later that day, witnesses told police that Holdridge pulled into the rest area, and not long after, they say the car exploded. While police are investigating what happened at the rest stop, prosecutors say their attention is focused elsewhere.

Hank Zavislak, Jackson County Prosecutor: "Not to minimize what occurred to the alleged perpetrator, but our primary concern is with the victim and now the victim has again been victimized yet another time as a result of what apparently transpired."

The prosecutor says he was prepared to take the investigation to court, but now the case is closed. ..Source.. by Brittany Gray

Mortuary sex case widens

7-2-2010 Iowa:

MALVERN, Iowa — Stephen Beattie worked for the county roads department for 27 years. He devoted much of his adult life to responding to emergency calls for Malvern's Volunteer Fire Department.

His lifelong friend, Karl Hertz, ran the funeral home in Malvern. Hertz was a respected civic leader. At one time, he served as the small town's mayor.

Neither man had a criminal history. Both have been implicated in a case involving allegations of sexually abusing a local teenage boy.

“This was a very unsettling mattter for the community of Malvern, and those people associated with the community, because of the nature of the allegations and the people involved,” Mills County Attorney Marci McClellan said Thursday.

Hertz, 62, committed suicide April 16, several hours after sheriff's deputy Kim Clark served him with a search warrant.

Two days earlier, deputies had received allegations that Hertz and Beattie had sexually abused a 17-year-old boy who worked at Hertz's funeral home.

Hertz's death spawned a flurry of rumors in the town of 1,200 but brought few answers until Thursday. That's when authorities unveiled the results of their four-month investigation.

“I think people are glad they're finally opening up about it instead of feeling like they're pushing things under the rug,” said Angie Connor, who works at the Casey's General Store in Malvern.

Several people declined to comment for this article, citing close relationships with the families connected to the case.

“It's going to be a bad deal no matter what,” said Cindy Bowley, former owner of Bowley's Bistro in downtown Malvern.

Police arrested Beattie, 55, Thursday night at his workplace in Council Bluffs. He is charged with one felony count of third-degree sexual abuse and two serious misdemeanors: lascivious acts with a minor and indecent exposure. A conviction on the felony charge carries a 10-year prison term.

At a hearing Friday, a Mills County magistrate judge agreed to reduce Beattie's bail. He must post 10 percent of $12,000 - or $1,200 - rather than the full $12,000 in cash. James Martin Davis said he expects his client to be released from the Mills County jail later today, after relatives post the bail.

Davis told reporters after the hearing that his client did not have any relationship with the 17-year-old boy.

"I don't think there was any relationship between this boy and my client, and I am surprised they filed three charges. I think my client was just an add-on. Initially, the main thrust of the investigation was directed at the funeral director.

"I don't think there is any DNA evidence with respect to my client."

McClellan said that if Hertz were alive, he would have faced the same charges as Beattie, plus additional charges for similar acts involving a 14-year-old boy.

The age of consent in Iowa is 16.

Mills County Sheriff Eugene Goss said the criminal investigation is closed unless other youths contact his office to allege that they were abused.

The criminal complaint against Beattie makes these allegations:

On April 14, Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs contacted the Sheriff's Office about a possible sexual assault involving a juvenile boy.

A 17-year-old boy and his parents spoke with a sheriff's deputy. The next day, Project Harmony interviewed the boy and he provided details about alleged sexual encounters with Beattie and Hertz.

The boy told authorities that on April 14 he and Beattie were in the basement of Hertz's home, changing light bulbs. Beattie worked as a part-time handyman for Hertz.

The boy got off the ladder and Beattie asked him to sit on the couch. Beattie performed oral sex on the boy, according to the criminal complaint.

Hertz later took the boy to the Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home where, according to the complaint, they performed oral sex on each other. Hertz then took the boy home.

The boy told authorities he had worked for Hertz for three years and had engaged in similar conduct with Hertz for the previous seven months.

Hertz also showed the teen pornographic images on the computer in the basement of the funeral home, according to the complaint.

On the night of April 15, the Sheriff's Office obtained a DNA sample from Hertz after serving search warrants for physical evidence from his home and businesses, including bedding, clothing and a computer.

The Sheriff's Office obtained a DNA sample from Beattie on April 16.

McClellan said April 14 marked the first time that sheriff's deputies had received allegations of sexual misconduct involving either man.

She said Hertz's suicide affected the investigation.

“This investigation was just in its infancy,” she said. “We had not had any prior contact with Mr. Hertz prior to executing the search warrant. We had not done any interviews with him yet. We did not know what we had.”

McClellan said authorities found Hertz's DNA on clothing that belonged to the alleged victim, but they did not find Beattie's DNA on the same clothing.

Davis said Beattie now works as a traveling medical equipment salesman in Iowa and Nebraska.
He said the Hertz suicide complicates the case against Beattie.

“He's a critical player who is now missing,” Davis said. “One of the key witnesses is now deceased. This kid alleges that a sexual act took place against his will, so now it's this kid's word against my client's word.” ..Source.. by John Ferak, WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Child porn suspect kills self in garage

6-17-2010 Florida:

A Clay County man wanted on child-pornography charges killed himself Tuesday morning before authorities could arrest him.

Norman Charles Wood, 56, of the 7100 block of Tarpon Court in Fleming Island was about to be arrested by officers from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Attorney General’s Office.

When authorities arrived at Wood’s home about 6 a.m., they heard a gun go off. Moments later Wood was found in his garage with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Wood was the subject of an ongoing investigation being conducted by the attorney general’s Child Predator CyberCrime Unit. The unit found images of child pornography in September 2009 and traced it back to his computer, said attorney general spokeswoman Ryan Wiggins.

The computer was seized in October and pornographic images of children as young as 10 were found on the hard drive, she said. ..Source.. by The Times-Union
