MD- Suspected online rapist kills himself after police stand-off

7-30-2008 Maryland:

A 33-year-old Suitland man suspected of raping women he met on craigslist.org, a community and networking Web site, died July 23 after he shot himself during a police barricade in Hyattsville.

Mark Humphries, 33, of the 4100 block of Suitland Road barricaded himself for several hours yesterday in a Hyattsville apartment, located in the 4200 block of Oglethorpe Street, according to a police news release.

Humphries is suspected of nine rapes in Prince George’s County over the past several months, including a July 14 rape that occurred on Malcolm Road. Police say they suspect he met at least eight of his victims through craigslist.org.

Police arrived at the Hyattsville apartment at about 12:30 p.m. July 23 with a warrant for his arrest, and after several hours of a stand-off, they heard a gun shot. Humphries shot himself one time in his upper body, and was transported to a hospital for his injuries. He died at 10:30 p.m, according to police.

Police ruled his death a suicide, but will continue investigating the rapes.

“There might be other victims involved, and they’ll wrap up the investigation,“ Prince George’s County Police spokesman Stephen Pacheco said. ..News Source.. by Elahe Izadi | Staff Writer

CT- Garner inmate commits suicide

7-24-2008 Connecticut:

Coventry man accused of killing girlfriend

NEWTOWN -- A Coventry man accused of murdering his pregnant girlfriend hanged himself Wednesday at the Garner Correctional Institution, authorities said.

Officials with the state Department of Corrections said a cellmate informed staff around 4:30 a.m. that Alfredo Ferrer, 43, had hanged himself. He was found with a bedsheet tied around his neck, with the other end of the sheet secured to the cell door at the high security prison on Nunnawauk Road.

Staff members attempted to revive Ferrer, who was transported to Danbury Hospital and pronounced dead at approximately 5:30 a.m., officials said.

Ferrer was arrested April 14 after a standoff with police and was charged with murder for allegedly shooting his live-in girlfriend, Amanda Realie, 27, in their apartment. The woman died several days later.

Investigators said Ferrer told authorities he and Realie were fighting over her heroin use and his history as a sex offender when he accidentally shot her in the face.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a blood-spattered Ferrer in the parking lot of a nearby restaurant. He was holding a gun and his 2-year-old son and threatening to kill himself.

Brain Garnett, a spokesman for the DOC, declined to comment Wednesday on whether Ferrer was on a suicide watch or had any mental health issues. He noted, however, that Garner "is our designated facility for adult male offenders with significant mental health needs."

He added that the corrections department has enhanced its suicide prevention protocol in recent years and it has "proven to be very effective." Staff members are trained, and cell checks are conducted every 30 minutes.

"Suicide has always been an issue in correctional settings," Garnett said, adding that the last suicide to occur at Garner was in May.

State Rep. Michael Lawlor, D-East Haven, chairman of the legislature's Judiciary Committee, said if Ferrer was in Garner while his case was pending he likely had a "high mental health score."

He added that the facility is understaffed and stretched thin when it comes to dealing with mentally ill inmates.

"We don't have enough facilities for people with mental illness," he said.

Lawlor said while Ferrer belonged in the high-security prison, there are nonviolent offenders -- such as homeless men charged with trespassing or urinating in public -- who would be better served by community-based health services such as halfway homes and treatment facilities.

"This is just one example of what happens when the staff is overwhelmed with mentally ill inmates," he said. "They just don't have the resources they need to manage this population."

Garnett said an intensive investigation into Ferrer's death has already been launched and, as with any suicide in a correctional facility, officials will determine "if there is anything we could have done better."

"We take great efforts in preventing inmates from harming themselves," he said.

Ferrer was being held on a $2 million bond. In addition to murder, he was charged with assault on a pregnant woman, and two counts of risk of injury to a child. His next court appearance was scheduled for Friday.

Court officials said Ferrer was convicted in the 1980s of sexually assaulting a minor, then escaped from prison in 1991 and remained a fugitive until he was arrested for marijuana possession in New York in 2002.

Ferrer's death comes a month after a ruling in Rockville Superior Court that there was enough evidence to put him on trial in the murder case.

The State's Attorney in charge of the case, Matt Gedansky, could not be reached for comment. ..News Source.. by Dirk Perrefort, Staff Writer

VA- Owner of downtown Roanoke business dies; was being investigated by police

7-22-2008 Virginia:

The owner of a landmark Roanoke City Market business has died, just days after police seized his computer and found child pornography on it, according to court documents and the Roanoke Medical Examiner’s office.

Kent Agnew, 61, whose family has owned and operated Agnew Seed for decades, died of unknown causes sometime between Sunday night and this morning, according to assistant chief medical examiner Dr. Paul Benson. Benson said he is waiting on test results before making a determination on cause of death.

Asked about Agnew’s death, Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said officers were called at midnight to a building in the 300 block of Market Street to investigate a death. Johnson would not identify the person who died or the address but said the body was found inside a building.

Agnew Seed is at 301 Market St.

Johnson said the death did not appear to be suspicious and police did not suspect foul play.

Ireland- Man dies over child sex case

7-20-2008 Ireland:

Child prostitution suspect may have committed suicide

A MAN is thought to have committed suicide after being questioned by detectives investigating allegations of child prostitution in west Dublin, writes John Mooney.

The man’s body was recovered from the Royal Canal near Blanchardstown two weeks ago. Although gardai are conducting an investigation into the cause of death, they have ruled out foul play and suspect that he killed himself.

The man was questioned by detectives two weeks ago after a 15-year-old immigrant said she had been coerced into prostitution and identified the man as a client.

Gardai believe he was introduced to the girl by a prostitute, who is alleged to have forced the teenager to offer sexual services. The prostitute, an African immigrant who was a friend of the girl’s family, was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of organising prostitution and causing a child to engage in sexual activity. A file is being prepared for the director of public prosecutions by detectives, who expect to press charges.

The case was reported to gardai in Blanchardstown after the girl told her mother what had happened. Gardai are trying to establish if any other girls were involved.

Cases of child prostitution are rare in Ireland, according to gardai, though some children’s charities, including the Irish Society for the Protection of Children (ISPCC), maintains that increasing numbers of young girls are involved.

“We know that young girls, particularly teenagers from immigrant communities who arrive in Ireland unaccompanied, are getting involved in prostitution,” said Caroline O’Sullivan, the ISPCC’s director of services. “This case yet again proves that child prostitution is happening and we urgently need new laws to protect youngsters who are vulnerable.

“If this case goes to court and the woman who has organised this stands trial, this girl will have to testify and prove her innocence, as opposed to the person who coerced her into prostitution actually proving their innocence.” ..News Source.. by John Mooney

NC- Suspect in Johnson City park sex sting kills himself

10-2-2007 North Carolina:

JOHNSON CITY — Less than 24 hours after Johnson City police announced charges against dozens of men allegedly involved in sex acts at city parks, one of those accused is believed to have killed himself.

A resident of Newland, N.C., 55-year-old Jerry McCloud, reportedly was found dead inside his home around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Authorities told a source in Avery County, N.C., that McCloud died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His body reportedly was found by a family member.

McCloud had been scheduled to appear in Washington County Sessions Court on Tuesday to answer to charges of indecent exposure and disorderly conduct.

He was one of 40 men charged in a two-week undercover investigation conducted by Johnson City police last month at Winged Deer and Buffalo Mountain parks.

Authorities said Monday their investigation into the inappropriate sexual behavior is far from over.

As news of the sting hit newspapers and local television stations Tuesday, undercover investigators arrested yet another man allegedly looking for sex at a park.

According to reports, an officer was conducting surveillance at Buffalo Mountain Park around 1 p.m. Tuesday when Clifford Deloach, 44, 2819 Emory Lane, approached him and asked him to engage in sexual activity.

Deloach allegedly led the officer to an area frequently used for such activity, and the pair made plans to engage in sex.

At that time, Deloach was issued a citation charging him with disorderly conduct.

All of the men charged in the recent sting are no longer allowed to visit any city park, police said. ..News Source.. by Kristen Swing

FL- Sexual Predator On The Lam Kills Himself

7-17-2008 Florida:

SPRING HILL - A detective searching for a sexual predator missing since Monday found his target dead by suicide Wednesday afternoon, authorities say.

Charles Heritage, 60, who goes by "Rick," took a bus to Pasco County upon his release from prison Monday for crimes he committed against small children in 2004. There he purchased "suspicious" items, authorities say.

That same day, he rented a room at the Quality Inn Hotel at U.S. 19 and Cortez Boulevard and checked out on Tuesday. He never fulfilled a scheduled appointment with his probation officer, authorities say.

Over the course of his investigation into Heritage's whereabouts, Detective Tommy Breedlove followed up on past residences of the suspect. He was led to a burned down house on Ostrom Way where Heritage once lived.

Breedlove found Heritage had hung himself in the woods behind the house, said Sgt. Donna Black, sheriff's spokeswoman.

Prison records show Heritage served three years and five months of a five-year sentence for two counts of providing obscene material to children, two counts of lewd and lascivious molestation and one count of lewd and lascivious exhibition.

Additionally, Heritage served prison time about 30 years ago in Indiana for sodomizing a teenager, according to a Tampa Tribune report.

The latest charges from Pasco County were a result of a sleepover at Heritage's house in 2004. Five neighborhood children, all 16 or younger, were at Heritage's house when he reportedly showed them child pornography and asked the youngsters "if they liked what they saw."

Heritage reportedly molested one of the children later that night and tried to coerce another one to perform a sex act. ..News Source.. by Kyle Martin

ID- Alleged molester commits suicide

7-12-2008 Idaho:

MOYIE SPRINGS - With several possible incidents of sexual abuse piling up against him, the Hayden businessman arrested for allegedly molesting a child last weekend committed suicide on Thursday.

Two campers came across the body of Mickey Allan Watson, 56, in the Moyie River near Twin Rivers Resort on Thursday night. The Boundary County Sheriff's Office determined that Watson had leapt off the Moyie River Bridge on Highway 2, and was killed by the 425-foot drop to the river below. Investigators concluded the death was intentional and self-inflicted.

Kootenai County officers had arrested Watson, owner of Watson Homes, on July 6 for allegedly fondling an 8-year-old girl at a float house in Bayview the day before.

Three witnesses told deputies that Watson touched the girl inappropriately after inviting her to sit on his lap during a fireworks show. Watson, a friend of the alleged victim's family, left the scene after being confronted by an adult at the home.
